TeamViewer PC Version Review - By Mike Kean
Pros: Simple
Good speed that has only a small delay
Free for non-commercial use
Accessible via web browser with Flash
Cons: A small tray is always visible during sessions though it can be hidden a bit
If it detects commercial use the time you can have per session becomes limited
No sound
Web version is not as easy to access without knowing where to look
Summary: The desktop version of TeamViewer is a great simple remote desktop application that is both free and cross-platform. You can control your pc from virtually any Flash-enabled web browser and there are also mobile apps you can get for free as well. I used the Android version.
A minor downfall is the lack of sound, but this is common among remote desktop programs. TeamViewer was nice also in the fact that it did not use very much cpu when it was in a session. This not only allowed for faster speed but also more resources for programs that use a lot of cpu power to either open, or run.
Another note is that the refresh style for the web version is a vertical wipe that starts at the center and updates the screen by wiping both up and down the screen originating from the center. To get what I mean, imagine looking through closed window blinds, and placing two hands in one slot between two shutters, then spreading them apart up and down. Thats what it looks like.
The refresh rate is fairly good, with only a small delay. But still, it isnt high enough to watch a video smoothly but it would still be fine for say, playing Bejeweled or even Angry Birds.
All in all, this is probably the best choice as far as free versions go, I think that it is good if you only wanted one remote desktop program installed because it is usable on so many platorms all for free. But if you are looking for one that is solely web browser based, the you should try Adobe Connectnow at Acrobat.com and yes it is also free. Yet if you are looking for sound, then check out SplashTop, which is free for PC, but the Android versions are $4.99 for the standard and $6.99 for the HD version which is optimzed for tablets, but they do not have a web version. Logmein has a web version but you must pay for sound.
